It’s International Women’s Day again and this time I’ve chosen one of the female icons, that usually is not really recognised as feminist, but as a sex icon: Marilyn Monroe.
But in reality, Marilyn was a business woman, owning her own career, fighting in a repressive male-dominated society and refusing to be subjugated based on her gender. More and more unhappy with her roles as erotic blonde woman, in 1954 Marilyn started to enhance her career even further by founding her own production company “Marilyn Monroe Productions” and having better control over her roles. Since WW1, she was the 1st woman in the male-dominated film industry to found a studio, focussing on strong and empowering female main roles.
She successfully battled her employers for artistic freedom, equal pay, and respectful working conditions.
And look, how powerful she looks on the wall.
I am very proud of this artwork, as I was planning this for a while and it finally got time, especially because she surprises with her history, compared to what she usually is known for and so got more awareness about her hidden power.
