As second motif for International Women’s week in 2019, I’ve chosen Coco Chanel. Being early feminist, she liberated herself and a whole generation of modern women from „traditional“ female clothes and decoration and so also changed the self-conception and self-awareness.
I was lucky, that in this week one of my best friends from Milan – Olga – visited me, a strong and powerful feminist on her own and as allies are one of the most important fighters for Women’s rights, she brought two of them to our secret spot in the stairwell and so we created a giant portrait of Coco Chanel in no time.
Of course, creating a pixel artwork, which is reduced enough to the minimum and still big enough to recognise the motif, was a very long process in advance. Achieving this with Coco Chanel was feasible thanks to her very own style, the hat, her typical necklace and her makeup style. It made clear to me, that just portraying a person in the future wouldn’t be enough, it’s also about arrangements around the motif, achievements, typical poses or clothing and accessories, to make it clear to any observer, who is shown in the portrait.
